Mitsubishi Drift Cars: Evolution of Sideways Performance

Mitsubishi's legacy in drift culture is inseparable from the legendary Lancer Evolution series. While engineered for rally dominance with all-wheel drive, the Evo's robust 4G63 turbocharged engine and aggressive styling made it a prime candidate for drift conversion. From the Evo IV through the final Evo X, these rally-bred machines have carved their place in drift history through bold AWD-to-RWD swaps and bulletproof powertrains that handle extreme boost and abuse on the drift circuit.

The Legendary Lancer Evolution Series

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV through IX represents the golden era of drift-converted Evos. Built on the legendary 4G63 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, these models delivered factory power ranging from 280-300hp, with tuning potential reaching 600hp+ on stock internals. The Evo VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition and Evo IX became particularly sought-after for drift builds due to their robust drivetrains, active differentials, and readily available aftermarket support. The Evo X, featuring the newer 4B11T engine and advanced S-AWC system, brought modern refinement but required more complex conversion work for drift applications.

AWD to RWD Drift Conversions

Converting a Mitsubishi Evo from all-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive is the essential first step for serious drift builds. Popular conversion methods include full drivetrain swaps using CD009 Nissan transmissions, SR20DET or RB-series gearboxes, or custom adapter plates mating the 4G63 to dedicated drift transmissions. Many builders remove the front differential, transfer case, and center differential entirely, installing a welded or two-way LSD rear differential. These conversions dramatically reduce weight, eliminate understeer, and unlock the tail-happy characteristics that make Evos competitive drift machines alongside traditional Japanese RWD platforms.

4G63 Engine Heritage in Drift

The 4G63 engine is the beating heart of Mitsubishi's drift reputation. This iron-block, aluminum-head powerplant has proven itself capable of handling 800+ horsepower with upgraded internals, making it a favorite for budget-conscious and professional drifters alike. Common drift modifications include larger turbochargers (GT35R, Precision 6266), forged pistons and rods, upgraded fuel systems, and standalone engine management. The engine's robust bottom end, wide aftermarket support, and proven reliability under sustained high-RPM drift usage have made 4G63-powered Evos a staple in Formula Drift, King of Europe, and grassroots drift competitions worldwide.
